BEIJING, August 8) -- After traveling 137,000 kilometers through 130 cities in 130 days, the sacred flame finally arrived at Beijing 101 Middle School on Friday. In the hands of Xu Zhihong, president of Beijing University, the flame cauldron was ignited to thunderous applause.
Beijing 101 Middle School was picked as an ideal endpoint for two reasons. It is located by Beijing University and Tsinghua University, and it serves as home base for some 200 young representatives from around the world who are attending the Olympic Youth Camp. Six of the camp attendees were also chosen to be torchbearers in this last leg.
Today's relay, which began at the Peking Man site, is the last before the torch alights the flame cauldron in the National Stadium to signal the start of the 2008 Olympic Games.
