Actually the only american bands i really like are 30 Seconds to Mars and Incubus.

i mainly listen to canadian and british bands even though i live in the mid-west usa.

I'm not sure about most of these one trick bands... only time will tell us their worth... most american bands don't seem to last very long...  thanks to the attention span of their so-called fans who only care about what's cool.   Or maybe most american music is just boring.   China, please don't look to america for inspiration and influence... China doesn't need the west and it's culture to be great.  China already has great culture.  Japan was heading in the right direction with their album "Tin Drum" with it's Asian sounds.  I know there are some very talented Chinese who can create something much better than the crap you hear on american radio.  The problem is, they think they have to look to the west for inspiration.  Look around you.

While i do respect every opinion on these topics, i cant help but sense some negative views on american music. this site is to "build a bridge to understanding" not to burn the bridges that may link our cultures. I think if the Chinese people want to have any kind of view on American music they should experience it themselves, so please do not let nay sayers tell you that american music is bad. Creat your own opinion. Thank you.

When you are talking about American music it all comes down to one act...the Dave Matthews Band.  People may agree or disagree but from the melodies, the interplay of the band, and the joy of a live show I just don't think they can be beat.  I've seen them over 20 times in three different countries and it still rocks my world.  When I was teaching English in China I made it a point to introduce all my students by having DMB Fridays and the kids loved the music.  I'm not saying I don't listen to other types of music and I would certainly never claim that everyone has to like him but if you haven't heard the band, you have got to try 'em out.

I agree with Harlequin27 that people should decide for themselves what type of music they like. American music is includes a huge number and verity of bands and characterize any band. I am not a particular fan of popular, modern American music but I would have to say that Tom Waits is one of my all time favorite performers regardless of nationality.

it seems many of you have been mislead about American music. Granted what is played on the radio alot of people here like but there is more generes of music than just radio music, much more. And they tend to have much more dedicated fan bases. i think Metal music is one of the greatest examples of this in America. There is a huge following behind metal music. Many people here also get sick of radio music and loose their "fan" status because the radio here, plays the same songs over and over again. if you listen to the radio alot it becomes old. i could also say many things about China and their role in the world that are negative but I will choose to rebuild the bridge and try to make it a bigger and better bridge. three of your favorite bands  is  my favorite~

"There is no music fact, only music theory" EVH.  To say that all american music concerns only one band is completely false.  In my "opinion", I would not even consider Dave Mathews Band in the top 20 of greatest american bands.  But I do not enjoy that type of music.  I am more interested in great musicians that make up a group.  Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Jimmy Hendrix, The Doors, Elton John, Beach Boys, Kiss, Van Halen, Hank Williams, George Jones, George Straight, Run DMC, Fab Five Freddy, The Boston Pops, Grandpa Jones, Metallica.. just to name a few, have had an impact on american music through out the years.  It is a grand mixture of styles that makes it so diverse and great.  I do not enjoy all styles of music, but I enjoy most.  From classical to metal, most people will find one or more to enjoy.  My favorite musical group of all time is Van Halen.  Any one that knows guitar or even meddles in playing it understands where Mr. Eddie Van Halen has taken the art of the instrument.  That being said, I would not say that american music begins and ends with this group, they are only a piece of the tapestry that continues to grow.
